Best Sailing Locations in the British Virgin Islands

A bucket list destination for sailors of all skill levels, the BVI are home to many of the best sailing destinations in the world. From the gentle trade wind breezes to diving spots teeming with sea life, the British Virgin Islands are a sailor’s dream destination. Join us on a beginner or advanced sailing course to experience some of the top sailing locations in the Virgin Islands.

Virgin Gorda

One of the largest islands in BVI, Virgin Gorda is certainly its most unique sailing destination. Renowned for the large granite rocks, The Baths are one of the most photogenic sailing spots in the Virgin Islands. Sailors who moor near the volcanic boulders are treated to a dramatic landscape while swimming through mysterious caves and lounging on beautiful white sand beaches.

But there’s more to see on the island named by Christopher Columbus. From the rocky coastlines of Devil’s Bay National Park to the panoramic views from Virgin Gorda Peak, this island is full of scenic surprises.

It’s also home to shipwrecks, white sand beaches like the one in Savannah Bay, and a popular resort on a private island at Saba Rock Resort.graphical user interface

Anegada

Sailors visiting the British Virgin Islands should not overlook Anegada during their vacation in the Virgin Islands. It’s home to one of the most expansive coral reefs in the Caribbean. Horseshoe Reef is an 18-mile stretch of colorful coral, crustaceans, and tropical fish.

There are many beautiful beaches in Anegada. From the popular Cow Wreck Beach which has a bar and restaurant, to the pristine white sands and calm shores at Loblolly Beach—this island is a dream destination for sailors looking to connect with the sea.

Note that Anegada is usually reserved for our advanced courses in the BVI. Experienced sailors should add this to their list of top sailing locations!

Norman Island

Sailors looking for the liveliest sailing spots will want to stop by Norman Island and visit the infamous Willy Ts. The floating double-decker dive bar is a fun place to have lunch or happy hour 7 days a week.

Norman Island influenced Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and it’s no surprise. Chatting with locals, you may hear tales of pirates and lost treasure that might just inspire you to scour the sandy ocean floors for gold.

The Treasure Point Caves are a great place to snorkel and scuba and have been rumored to be home to some of the fabled pirate booty.

Copper Island

If you book a sailing course with Go Sail VI, there is a good chance you may see one of the best sailing locations in the Virgin Islands. Copper Island is home to a well-known beach club but is also a great place to discover uncrowded beaches and exciting dive sites.

Salt Island Wreck of the Rhone is a fun place to explore a 19th-century shipwreck, and there are lots of sea turtles around, thanks to a local conservation effort.

Jost Van Dyke

This small island is brimming with white sand beaches. It is also surrounded by “deserted islands” like Sandy and Diamond Cays. On the mainland, one of the most popular hikes leads you to The Bubbly Pool—a rocky cove where the strong tides coming in and out resemble a jacuzzi tub.

Jost Van Dyke is the best sailing destination in BVI for foodies. You can sample local BBQ at some of our favorite restaurants, like the Soggy Dollar Bar or Foxy’s.
