How Sailors Can Celebrate Giving Tuesday

Poster titled 'How Sailors Can Celebrate Giving Tuesday' with hands holding a gift.

Giving Tuesday is a relatively new tradition, but it is catching on in the Virgin Islands and across the world. Sailing charities encourage sailors to help local communities and protect Mother Earth by donating their time or money to various organizations on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  Now, more VI charities are joining in on the efforts, raising money and inspiring more people to lend a hand.

If you’re wondering how you can contribute, this article can help provide some ideas for celebrating Giving Tuesday this year!

Donate to Virgin Islands Organizations

Go Sail Virgin Islands is committed to helping the communities in the USVI and BVI, and we are happy to give you some ideas for how you can help! If you’re sailing this Thanksgiving season, make some time to volunteer with a local organization such as:

  • The Nature Conservancy: The Nature Conservancy has locations throughout the world, where they work with residents and local organizations to protect the environment. The charity has a location in St. Croix, which has helped preserve the Virgin Islands’ gorgeous nature for several decades.
  • Green VI: This local organization is based in the Virgin Islands, where you can volunteer your time teaching young residents how to protect the environment. How can you help? This Giving Tuesday, you can donate money, participate in a beach cleanup, or even teach a class about preserving nature in the Virgin Islands.

Contribute to Sailing Charities

Another way you can celebrate Giving Tuesday is to contribute to organizations specifically dedicated to sailing. These organizations do everything from promoting the sport to preserving the environment. You can donate to charities such as:

  • US Sailing: If you want to contribute to the future of sailing in the USA, you can donate to the largest sailing organization in the United States. From making sailing more accessible to young enthusiasts to sponsoring Olympic and Paralympic events, US Sailing is a great organization to contribute to this Giving Tuesday. Last year, US Sailing’s Giving Tuesday event made a major impact, as they matched any donation up to $5,000!
  • World Sailing Trust: The international governing body of sailing, World Sailing, has this trust set up for passionate sailors to give back. The money from donations is used to provide resources and education for teaching new sailors around the world and setting up programs that help reduce pollution.

Pay it Forward

One of the best aspects of sailing is all the great people you can meet along the way! A fun way to celebrate Giving Tuesday is to surprise other sailors with a random act of kindness. A small gesture like cooking dinner for the crew or treating everyone on board to happy hour can go a long way toward boosting morale on a sailing vacation in the Virgin Islands.

Celebrate Giving Tuesday With Go Sail VI

Give the gift of sailing! Celebrate Giving Tuesday by inviting a loved one to sail with you when you book a learn to sail vacation. Sailing on Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season is a fun way to celebrate while doing something you’re passionate about (or learning a new hobby).

Keep the spirit of charity alive this Giving Tuesday and choose one of these ways to help sailors, community members, and the environment!
