Teal graphic with 'Sailing FAQs' and 'Sailboat Chartering Costs' text, plus various nautical icons.A Virgin Islands boat charter is the best way to explore the Caribbean’s gorgeous beaches and secluded coves at your own pace. However, budgeting for a sailboat charter is an essential step in setting realistic expectations and avoiding unexpected expenses during the voyage. Check out these helpful answers to some frequently asked questions about the cost to charter a sailboat:

What are the types of sailboat charters?

The two main types of sailboat charters are captained charters and bareboat charters. Captained charters are generally much more expensive than bareboat charters because if you charter a bareboat charter, you don’t need to hire a captain. However, bareboat chartering does require some experience. Go Sail Virgin Islands offers sailboat charter certification courses through American Sailing. Once you have your American Sailing certification to bareboat charter, you can charter your own boat just about anywhere in the world! Go Sail Virgin Islands offers special discounts to American Sailing members and our sailing school alumni on Virgin Islands charters.

How much does it cost to charter a sailboat in the Virgin Islands?

The price of a Virgin Islands boat charter depends on several factors. To receive a quote for your trip and to ensure you are matched with the right sailboat for your needs, send us an email specifying if you want to depart from the USVI or BVI, your preferred dates, the number of guests, and details about the type of yacht (make, size, brand) that you wish to charter. We will discuss the amenities available (such as a water maker, air conditioning, and a generator) and review the price for all available options.

What factors most influence the price of a sailboat charter?

A number of factors determine the cost to charter a sailboat. They include, but are not limited to, the season, type and brand of sailboat, number of guests and cabins, and various optional onboard amenities you might add.

What is typically included in the charter fee?

On a sailboat charter with Go Sail Virgin Islands, we provide the sailboat itself, required safety gear, and some housekeeping supplies (a sponge, dish soap, and a trash bag) in the galley. We also offer several optional onboard amenities, which we can discuss with you when you contact us.

What other costs should I consider for a sailboat charter?

Provisioning for food, beverages, and extra household supplies must be considered. Marina or mooring fees may apply, especially in popular ports. Budget for the cost of fuel too, even if you don’t plan on motoring much you may still use quite a bit of fuel for air conditioning!

How can I save money when chartering a sailboat?

Go Sail Virgin Islands offers a special 10% discount on charters for Go Sail alumni and members of the American Sailing Association. By visiting the Virgin Islands in the shoulder season, you will find lower prices, including on sailboat charters. Because bareboat charters are more economical than captained charters, ASA sailing courses are a smart investment that will make it easier for you to sail without hiring a crew, saving money in the long run.
