FAQs: How Can Sailors Make the World A Better Place?

Teal background with 'Sailing FAQs' in ship wheel, icons, and text: 'How Can Sailors Make the World A Better Place?'

Sailing is a privilege that many people go a lifetime without trying—it’s a shame because it can teach you a lot about the world. If you have the chance to sail the Virgin Islands, you can see that it’s a way to connect with Mother Earth and see things from a different perspective.

Sailors often form a bond with destinations worldwide, which leads to efforts to protect nature and communities for future generations. Here are some ways that sailors can make the world better for everyone.

How Can We Protect the Sea?

From saying no to single-use plastic to downloading digital sailing tools, sailors can rely on the latest technology and resources to reduce waste that ends up in our oceans. Using sustainable sailing equipment (including recycled ropes and solar-powered appliances) allows sailors to travel the world in a more eco-friendly way.

Can I Help Local Communities?

Yes! Sailing gives people the chance to see more of the world and learn about different cultures and traditions. When you visit the USVI or BVI, you can immerse yourself in local communities and see how people live in other parts of the world. You can also give back.

Volunteering with a local organization like Green VI is a way to contribute to local communities by participating in a beach cleanup or teaching children how to protect the Virgin Islands.

How Can I Anchor Responsibly?

Over the years, sailors have learned about the impact that anchoring can have on the ocean floor. Some locations we visit on Go Sail VI sailing courses require mooring permits to help prevent anchors from dragging across coral or the seabed—others don’t. If you are anchoring or mooring, our ASA sailing instructors can show you how to anchor and moor without damaging the ocean.

Can I Learn How to Sail Responsibly?

Absolutely! Teaching the next generation of sailors how to sail responsibly is something that our captains and crew take a lot of pride in. You can join Go Sail VI as a fractional, part-time, or full-time instructor and continue to show sailors from around the world how to sail. You can help us teach sailors to enjoy the Virgin Islands and minimize their environmental impact on an eco adventure.

What Else Does Sailing Teach You?

One of the benefits of sailing is the bond you form with other sailors, working with each other to overcome challenges as a team. Taking this collaborative approach off the boat and into the real world can help teach people how to work with others and make a difference at work and in their communities.
