Weather Safety While Sailing
The Virgin Islands’ weather is generally more predictable than a lot of popular sailing locations. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t plan ahead.
Sailing conditions can change quickly, so it’s always important to understand the basics of weather safety before setting sail. Here’s a look at some frequently asked questions about the weather in the Virgin Islands.
Is It Usually Safe to Sail in the Virgin Islands?
Yes! The USVI and BVI have some of the safest sailing weather in the world. There’s a reason that locals call the Caribbean Islands a destination for “champagne sailing.” Currents are usually mild, the swells are smaller than other popular locations, and winds typically don’t exceed 20 knots for much of the year. Happy sailing!
Do the Virgin Islands Experience Hurricanes?
Both the British and US Virgin Islands do have a hurricane season. This lasts from August to October, and it can present some challenges on your sailing vacation.
Always check the weather before you set sail (we will never sail during hurricanes), and if you take a sailing course during this time, be sure to ask our captains and crew if you have any concerns about rainy and windy conditions.
Will I Get My Money Back If I Cancel Due to Weather?
Unfortunately, we are unable to reimburse sailors due to weather-related cancellations. That said, we’ve never had to cancel due to hurricanes! And in the event that we deem it unsafe to sail, we will work with you to schedule Virgin Island sailing courses or a bareboat charter within three months of your original date. We always recommend travel insurance to offset the cost of changing your travel plans.
Can You Sail Safely in the Rain?
Absolutely! While it’s important to pay attention to precipitation and winds, you can sail safely even during the rainy season. While you won’t want to be on open waters if there is lightning, normal rain showers are generally safe to sail in.
When Is the Safest Sailing for Beginners?
If you are taking beginner sailing courses, stick with the peak sailing season. The Virgin Islands have ideal sailing weather from November to July.
Can Advanced Sailors Sail Safely During Hurricane Season?
Even though hurricanes can lead to conditions unfit for sailing, it’s actually possible to sail most of the year—even during the tropical storm season (as long as a hurricane is not currently happening).
If you are taking advanced sailing courses, scheduling them during November, June, and July is a great time to avoid crowds and get better deals on flights.
Do the Virgin Islands Get Big Waves?
One of the most important weather factors to pay attention to when sailing safely in the Virgin Islands is the tides. While not as strong as other popular sailing locations, sailors may experience large swells, especially during the hurricane and winter seasons. Don’t Worry there are bays to hide from the waves and swell and we will show you the way.
How Windy Are the Virgin Islands?
The Virgin Islands are typically perfect for sailing, with winds that typically hover around 15-20 knots. It can get much windier during off-peak season, but this is an opportunity for advanced sailors to gain skills in the Caribbean.
