American Sailing (ASA) Courses in the Spanish Virgin Islands
Earn your American Sailing certifications while exploring one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful and lesser-traveled cruising grounds: The Spanish Virgin Islands! Our Spanish Virgin Islands sailing itinerary offers the perfect combination of hands-on sailing instruction, offshore passages, and unforgettable anchorages. There is no other sailing course certification itinerary like it. It is truly a one-of-a-kind sailing vacation!
Level Up Your Sailing in the Spanish Virgin Islands
Gain sailing confidence while exploring islands that many Caribbean sailors never reach! Starting in St. Thomas (USVI), this weeklong sailing course takes students west to the Spanish Virgin Islands of Vieques, Culebra, and Culebrita. Along the way you’ll gain real-world sailing experience while completing ASA 101, ASA 103, ASA 104, and ASA 114 certifications.
The Spanish Virgin Islands offer some of the most diverse sailing conditions in the Caribbean, making them an ideal training ground for sailors who want more than short island hops. Our Spanish Virgin Islands adaptable itinerary includes longer passages, navigation challenges, and plenty of time to enjoy the Caribbean’s most spectacular beaches and bioluminescent bays.
A Sample 7 Day Spanish Virgin Islands Sailing Itinerary
Go Sail Virgin Islands’ Spanish Virgin Islands course offers much more than a typical sailing trip. The Spanish Virgin Islands itinerary delivers the full cruising experience in some of the Caribbean’s most spectacular destinations. This sample Spanish Virgin Islands itinerary will also give you an idea of what you can expect during your weeklong sailing course with Go Sail.
Day 1: Arrival
Fly into St Thomas, USVI (STT) and take a taxi to the marina. We spend the first night on the dock and the Captain will greet you at 5 pm to show you to your cabin. Check out all the details for navigating your arrival to St Thomas in our “Arriving in the Virgin Islands” video!
Day 2: Vieques
Sail to the beautiful waterfront town of Esparanza and enjoy the seaside promenade lined with restaurants and beach bars. Duffy’s and Bananas are too of our favorite stops. Don’t get too comfortable on shore though. Your Captain will likely have a night sail or early morning sail planned!
Day 3: Mosquito Bay
After a long night sail, sleep in and then enjoy the day exploring Mosquito Bay. It’s widely considered the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. This location is a favorite among our sailing students!
Day 4: Culebra
Sail to Dewey Harbor and visit the world famous Flamenco Beach, often ranked among the world’s best beaches! Take a picture with the iconic spray-painted WWII tanks and practice your dinghy parking skills at the “dinghy drive-up” restaurant (Dinghy Dock Restaurant).
Day 5: Culebrita
It’s a short sail but a navigationally difficult one to get from Culebra to Culebrita. The shallow waters and narrow passage will test your skills but it’s fully worth it! Once you anchor in Culebrita, hike to the lighthouse for sweeping views of the Caribbean.
Day 6: The Journey Back
The journey back to St. Thomas will give you plenty of time to perfect your tacking skills! It’s an upwind sail and often takes about 6 hours.
Day 7: Departure Day
We wake up in a bay near the marina. We will begin early with short sail and return to the marina dock at 9 am to get fuel and say your “see you soons” to your captain! We will will be off the boat by 10 am. The taxi ride is about 20 minute ride to the airtport. Plan to take an afternoon flight so you have plenty of time check in 2 hours early for your flight.
