Graphic with text 'Sailing FAQs: The Best Age to Start Sailing' and Virgin Islands logo. When it comes to sailing, age is just a number! People discover their passion for the open water at all stages of life, and students from a variety of backgrounds and ages are welcomed on Go Sail Virgin Islands’ weeklong learn-to-sail vacations. Here we answer some of the most common questions about the best age to start sailing:

Do more people start sailing later in life or from a young age?

People begin sailing at all ages, and there is no “wrong” time to start. Those who grow up in a sailing family are likely to start young, but increasingly, adults are discovering the thrill of sailing later in life, thanks to growing interest in unique travel experiences.

At Go Sail Virgin Islands, we regularly teach beginners in their 40s, 50s, and beyond in our immersive ASA sailing courses. The best place to get started is a weeklong liveaboard vacation, where you’ll earn certification for ASA 101, 102, and 104, plus the International Proficiency Certificate, allowing you to charter a sailboat all over the world.

Are there age restrictions on learn-to-sail courses?

There is no upper age limit for our liveaboard sailing courses. Participants only need to possess the mobility and general health to be able to perform basic sailing tasks like hoisting and lowering sails. Thanks to modern advancements in technology, materials, and design, sailing is less physically demanding now than it was in the past. This makes sailing more accessible and the community more diverse.

We also welcome students under 18 years old, but they must be accompanied by an adult.

Do many people start sailing in their 40s?

Certainly! Learning to sail in your 40s is extremely common. People in this age group combine maturity with physical strength and the ability to process new information quickly, making them excellent sailing students. Check out our Cruising Couples courses, where couples earn ASA certification together while identifying each partner’s strengths and how they can work together on the water.

What are the benefits of learning to sail in your 50s?

Learning to sail in your 50s can be particularly rewarding. It opens doors to new travel opportunities, social connections, and activities at a time when people start to have the time, freedom, and resources to enjoy them.

Is 60 too old to start sailing?

Your physical ability is more important than your age, and most individuals in their 60s can thrive on a sailboat with practice. For those in retirement and looking for a new interest that keeps them physically and mentally stimulated while exploring new places, sailing is a perfect choice!
