FAQ: Where to Stay in Tortola

Sailing FAQ cover with 'Where to Stay in Tortola' text and nautical graphics. If you are planning to take ASA sailing courses in the Virgin Islands, your journey with Go Sail Virgin Islands will begin in St. Thomas in the USVI or Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. If you choose a BVI itinerary, here are some questions our guests often have about staying in Tortola.

What Is the Best Area to Stay in Tortola?

If you’re taking a ferry or water taxi to Tortola, you’ll more than likely dock in Road Town. Go Sail VI ASA sailing courses typically meet at Village Cay Marina near the ferry terminal or at Nanny Cay.

Nanny Cay is one of our favorite areas to stay because it’s not far from Road Town, but feels more laid back and secluded. Staying at a Tortola hotel like Nanny Cay is a great way to settle into the Virgin Islands, with comfortable beds, a pool, and close access to the dockyard. If you’re traveling with your family, kids under 12 stay for free!

Moorings Yacht Club is another boutique hotel with a restaurant and pool, just across the Inner Harbour from the ferry terminal.

Other top-rated hotels are located just outside the town center, including The New View Inn—a 5-minute drive from the marina. This hotel offers kitchenettes, on-site security, family-friendly rooms, and free parking.

Do Tortola Hotels Have Nice Beaches?

Tortola has gorgeous beaches, but most are located across the island from Road Town. If you plan to stay a few days, accommodations like Long Bay Beach Resort and the Sugar Mill Hotel are a short drive from Nanny Cay and are near some of the most beautiful beaches in the Virgin Islands.

What Is the Safest Part of Tortola?

Nanny Cay is considered a safe area for sailors visiting Tortola. It’s located outside of the town center in an established marina community. The bay is sheltered from winds most of the time, and the harbor features 24-hour security.

What Is the Best Way to Get Around Tortola?

If you’re staying for a few days, renting a car is the best way to get around Tortola. However, most hotels near Nanny Cay have beaches, restaurants, and shops within walking distance.

Can I Stay on a Sailboat?

Yes! Our BVI sailing courses begin with a night at the dock. You can meet for your sailing reservation around 5 PM before settling into your cabin. This gives you time to meet the captain and crew, as well as become familiar with anyone else sailing on board.

Our cabins have queen or king beds and bathrooms, as well as common spaces to take in the scenery around the harbor. Meals can be enjoyed in the boat’s galley or at one of the local restaurants.

How Long Should I Stay on Tortola?

Staying at a hotel for a night or two before and after your sailing trip can make the travel process easier. You won’t feel as rushed, and you can have a chance to settle in and explore the island.

Tortola is one of our favorite islands in the BVI and an excellent place to use as your home base before taking ASA sailing courses
